Project of the Year (£10m and under)
Client: The University of Oxford
Construction product: New lecture theatre, foyer and seminar rooms
Contract value: £8.9m
Beard Construction were employed by the University of Oxford on a two-stage design and build of the 160-seat, single-storey theatre which would also accommodate an e-hub social learning space, two seminar rooms, a studio for teaching and for performance and a large foyer and bar area.
Due to the complex nature of the design, collaboration was key, with the contractor having direct contact with the client and researching different construction methods and ways to achieve the architects vision. They were also mindful of letting subcontractors know that they would be working to strict tolerances due to the knock-on effect of their work.
The entire team demonstrated an un-foundering level of commitment by solving many of the obstacles that arose during the design and build stages of the Sultan Nazrin Shah Building, such as stonework having to be installed out of sequence due to the installation of the windows being delayed and the works being restricted by numerous environmental access challenges.
This project is evidence of what can be achieved through teamwork, sheer determination and innovative thinking. There were many challenges and no room for error as everyone’s work had an impact on each other’s. Despite these difficulties a ‘once in a lifetime masterpiece’ was created and delivered to the client on schedule. The building has been described as ‘one of the country’s most jaw dropping venues’.
