Create energy
What we can't reduce, re-use or recycle, we create energy from through the controlled burning at high temperatures. The heat generated from the process is used to power water boilers, which in turn produce steam that drives generators which produce electricity. Combustion reduces the waste to 10 per cent of its original volume and 25 per cent of its original weight. Once the waste has been burned and the energy extracted for beneficial use, much of the residue can be recycled.

| The Log Pile | The National Energy Foundation's Log Pile project, is a project that aims to promote and aid the use of wood as a source of renewable energy and sustainable heating. Since January 2007, the National Energy Foundation have been a project partner in a EC-funded project, PELLETS@LAS. The aim of the project is to collect prices and volumes of pellets traded and summarise these into average values and an index for each country across Europe. The overall aim of the project is to increase the number of manufacturers, suppliers and consumers of pellets across Europe. The project website is a very useful source of information on pellets, including European pellet quality standards.
