Paints & Solvents

As the British Coatings Federation points out, paint has an important role to play in the maintenance of our environment. However, paint can have a negative environmental impact due to the fact that their composition can contain significant levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which contribute to atmospheric pollution. These are also present in solvents. This means that left over materials need to be disposed of as hazardous substances, which is expensive as well as environmentally undesirable.

According to Envirowise adopting a proactive solvent management strategy means that "with minimal costs, a small to medium sized company can save anything between £5,000 and £20,000 a year. For larger companies the savings can run into hundreds of thousands of pounds." They point out that it can also lower insurance premiums.

Charities may also have a use for unwanted paints. Companies interesting in donating might wish to contact Community Repaint to identify charities in their area looking for paint. It is important not to dispose of these materials by pouring them down the drain.
