Waste Minimisation
According to Waste Aware Construction, "Waste minimisation is part of the ‘lean construction' ethos", and the organisation stresses that it needs involvement from all actors in the process - clients, designers, and constructors - in order to be fully effective.
It's more than just recycling - as Envirowise point out, "Waste minimisation is all about reducing waste at source - not creating it in the first place. Waste can be designed out."
Waste minimization also needs to be defined holistically in order to be effective. Waste includes processes and transactions as well as materials - looked in this light, it is easy to see how waste minimization might benefit your business.
By using Consolidation Centres, for example, it has been demonstrated that businesses can save time and reduce accidents as well as lower materials and transportation costs - providing a real business advantage to firms who engage early with the opportunities.
Envirowise believe that firms with a comprehensive waste minimization programme could save 1% of turnover. They also point out that programmes cost very little to implement, and yield a payback which could impact on your bottom line within months rather than years.
