Guidance to Low Carbon Homes

 Which way to go?
This section of the site has been created to help you build Low Carbon Homes. It provides you with useful resources, good practice guidance, technical reports and website links to help you design and construct energy efficient and low carbon dwellings.

Energy efficient design is needed to minimise both energy demand from dwellings and CO2 emissions. Targets are being set and creative delivery will be required to ensure they are reached. Renewable energy sources will increasingly have to be incorporated for the majority of housing developments of 10 or more dwellings; some 10-20% of energy demand from new dwellings will have to be sourced from renewables either on or off site.

Resource efficiency, specifying and using materials cost effectively and minimising waste is essential in both the construction of the dwelling and in its use as a low carbon home.

Water savings are increasingly important, especially in the South East of England and the reduction of average household water consumption will save some of the carbon emissions generated by the processing and distribution of water.
