Building Materials

Using appropriate building materials to minimise the adverse environmental impact is essential for the delivery of low carbon homes.

There are ratings of materials to show how green their credentials are based on percentage of recycled material content and other things. Credits are awarded within the code for using materials that have a high rating within the BRE Green Guide, based on the whole life of material. Although currently the weightings are quite low for the material category within the Code, there are minimum standards that need to be adhered to.

Choosing the right material to use will essentially come down to cost so it is important to understand material specification and how to procure green.

One of the key materials that needs consideration in terms of sustainable sourcing and accreditation is timber. So we have included information about that in this section too.
