Retrofitting Sustainability - Business Link
Date: 9th July 2009
Location: Eastleigh, Hampshire
Event Schedule: Click here
80% of the houses in which we live in 2050 are already built today.
New house building is at an all time low and a number of initiatives are being developed to support the refurbishment of existing housing stock. Is your business ready to take advantage of the opportunities in the refurbishment market? Business Link is offering a series of Refurbishment workshops through the ERDF sponsored SMART Sustainable Construction programme. These workshops will be run by the award-winning Bioregional Development Group. The focus of the day will be on the opportunities and advantages of applying sustainable practice and materials to refurb and renovation. Speakers from Bioregional will discuss reclaiming and re-using construction material and sustainability through product selection. Rob Prewitt from Prewitt Architects will share his experience in retrofitting to exacting environmental standards on high profile projects. This course has been run as successful CPD training for designers and specifiers across the country and it is being offered here as a free half-day course. Spaces are limited and this is expected to be a popular event, so please register early. To book your place on this morning workshop please click here or call the Events Team on 01732 878555
How to make non-domestic buildings green
CABE Commissioner Robin Nicholson to be keynote speaker at RIBA South East’s conference on making non-domestic buildings sustainable
The necessary tension – and sometimes, the imbalance – between the moral and aesthetic in sustainable building design will be the subject of Robin Nicholson’s keynote address to the conference How to make non-domestic buildings green, the day-long conference organised by RIBA South East with the South East Centre for the Built Environment (SECBE), supported by the Low Carbon Trust, in Brighton on 21 May.
Robin, a senior member of Edward Cullinan Architects, has been a CABE Commissioner since 2002, where he chairs the Enabling Programme and leads on Climate Change and Sustainability.
How to make non-domestic buildings green, supported by the Low Carbon Trust and the South East Centre for the Built Environment (SECBE) is aimed at architects, building contractors, surveyors, engineers, Local Authorities and planners as well as the owners and users of new and refurbished non-domestic buildings – offices, schools, churches, shops, hospitals.
Case studies of ground-breaking projects and workshops will focus on the payback times for sustainable features; practical explanations of what works and what doesn’t; and how to truly ‘future-proof’ non-domestic buildings by preparing them for climate change;
Helen Wren, Director of RIBA South East says of the conference:
‘How to make non-domestic buildings green will show how even the smallest green modifications can have a huge impact on projects of all sizes. Everyone – including those construction professionals who are competing for larger non-domestic projects with assured funding, such as hospitals and schools - needs to know about the latest and most cost-effective sustainable techniques and finishes.’
Attendance at How to make non-domestic buildings green costs £125 inc VAT per person if booked before 1 May; £150 inc VAT thereafter. Details of the day and of the speakers are on the attached booking form. Enquirers should contact inforibasoutheast@inst.riba.org , 01892 515878

A one day conference
Tuesday 11 November 2008 atThistle Hotel, Brighton
Organised by RIBA South East and Low Carbon Trust, supported by SEEDA and SECBE
The Code for Sustainable Homes sets eco standards for domestic new build, but how do we deal with existing housing stock? Can we make houses constructed in the 1970s, the 1930s, or even earlier, come up to modern sustainable requirements? Most of our homes come into this category, so making even a small difference to each will have a huge impact on the carbon footprint of the UK. How do we design with this objective in mind?

Sink or Swim - Survival is Optional
Half day workshop on Thursday, 25 September 2008 in Reading
Working twice as hard and earning less could be an option - but to survive and thrive we need to get savvy and find ways to reduce our price without compromising profit by investigating our internal processes, and fine tuning them.
This event gives delegates an understanding of what lean "doing" is about. It will also prove the business case through case studies (tools & techniques) demonstrating practical implementation and pounds & pence savings. The time for action is NOW...unless your option is not to survive. As a result of the day, attendees will be able to:
- Understand the benefits of lean thinking AND doing
- Identify "quick wins" through recognising waste in their processes
- Identify opportunities to apply lean tools & techniques in their own organisation
- Identify ways of cutting costs sustainably, short and long term
Who should attend and why?
This workshop is aimed at those who wish to be more competitive in the current "credit crunch" environment - key decision makers who can appreciate the tools and techniques, which are process focused, and assimilate their application with very positive business outcomes. Directors to site managers, with appetite for change, will take away very usable strategies to ensure their company thrives.
