Consolidation Centers
These giant warehouses are devoted to efficient, just-in-time deliveries. The prototype in London was studied carefully by Constructing Excellence, and Building Magazine reports that they managed to reduce journeys into London by 67%, as well as delivering a staggering 97% of materials to the right place, at the right time in good condition. The London Centre also managed to reduce CO2 emissions by an estimated 70%.
Bringing this manufacturing approach to construction logistics has also made a valuable contribution to health and safety through improved materials handling and gave constructors valuable guarantees on the lead times for deliveries. SECBE is currently working with a number of stakeholders to replicate this success in the South East - keep checking their website for the latest information on developments.
