Our sector delivers some extraordinary landmark projects such as the award-winning Shard, £3bn Westfield Stratford, and Heathrow’s Terminal 5. It also delivers £100bn of homes, roads and schools that enable society and our economy to thrive. Yet construction continues to have significant skills shortages – in the first instance caused by a poor image that discourages entrants, followed by inadequate training for existing staff (average 1.5 days per year).  Add to this the continued use of traditional thinking and technologies and the result equals a lower workforce productivity than many other industries.

SECBE has considerable experience in driving improvements to address the skills shortages that hinder improved productivity and growth. SECBE created CoTrain, a shared apprenticeship scheme, to help companies win more work whilst training the future workforce at minimal risk, low cost and meeting Social Value Act obligations; CoTrain was developed in partnership with leading clients, contractors and CITB.  We also led the development of a collaborative CPD events system that integrated hundreds of professional institution’s CPD events into a single portal and drove their collaborative strategic planning.

Apprenticeship Initiative 2018 - CETC - Civil Engineering Training Centre (Fareham College)

This employer-led apprenticeship programme is co-designed to meet the needs of the industry, addressing skills shortages and productivity issues.
