Blog: Featured finalist - Caledonian Park Clock Tower & Heritage Centre (Clarkson Alliance)

08 June 2018

Preservation and Rejuvenation

Location: Islington, North London

Construction product: Heritage monument and new build heritage centre.

On the Heritage ‘At Risk’ register and described by the Historic England as ‘vacant and slowly decaying’, the challenge of this refurbishment project was to restore the ‘jewel in Islington’s crown’ and put the clock tower back into the heart of the community, providing a welcoming space, increase the usage of the park by residents and to provide an educational resource to engage people with their local history.

During the delivery of the project, a clear project governance structure was implemented which enabled consistent channels of communication, efficiency in decision making and therefore helping the project to remain on programme. Regular meetings enabled project outcomes to be revisited regularly and united the team with a shared vision.

Using innovative technology, such as sensory exhibits, ensured as many people as possible would benefit from the project’s legacy even if they could not climb the tower. Preserving the historic tower was paramount and a careful balance was struck between sensitive restoration and improving accessibility.

The winner of the Preservation and Rejuvenation category will be announced at the awards ceremony and gala dinner on the 28th of June at the Royal Lancaster London. for more information click here.
