Type of work: Refurbishment, renovation and extension
Project value: £3.5m
The Grade 1 listed cemetery is one of the oldest and the only in the country to be owned by the Crown and managed by The Royal Parks on behalf of the nation. The purpose of this project was to conserve and enhance the cemetery’s unique character, whilst protecting the wildlife, but improving the valuable open space for the local community and visitors to enjoy.
Early on it the project, detailed surveys were carried to ensure the supply chain and site teams understood the requirements of the project and the specialist knowledge of the sub-contractors was invaluable for collaborative input with the professional teams and Historic England. The scope of works did not drastically change due to detailed plans that had been initially undertaken, but there were several challenges that were identified during the project including discovering asbestos beneath floors, having it removed and sourcing new stones to match the original floors. Historic England and the Royal Parks were consulted at every step to ensure materials and methods undertaken were in line with heritage practices.
By collaborating with stakeholders including the many visitors during the development of this heritage site has ensured the successful delivery of this project and also maintaining total customer satisfaction throughout with zero complaints over the entire 60 week period.
The winner of the Preservation and Rejuvenation category will be announced at the awards ceremony and gala dinner on the 28th of June at the Royal Lancaster London. For more information about the event or to book ticket click here.
