*** WINNER *** Deloitte, 1 New Street Square - nominated by Overbury

Deloitte had a clear vision for their new head-quarters and they undertook extensive stakeholder consultation to develop a detailed brief. Procurement processes reflected targets for ground-breaking sustainable design standards. Rigorous competitive tendering delivered exceptional value and delivery partners that were highly motivated to challenge the norms. Not only did they seek to improve their colleagues’ productivity, satisfaction and ability to collaborate; but they also wanted to show more occupiers the strong business case for delivering better buildings.

1 New Street Square is a workplace that benefits people and planet. The office scored a record 94%, far exceeding the ‘Outstanding’ threshold and becoming the highest scoring BREEAM 2014 Refurbishment & Fit-out project in the world. The office also attained WELL Certified™ Gold, and in securing this it became both the largest WELL Certified™ Gold for ‘New and Existing Interiors’ project in the world; and the first BREEAM Outstanding/ WELL Gold dual-certified office fit-out in the world.

With this project, they have led the way in showing how environmental sustainability and user-centric design can go hand-in-hand in an innovative yet replicable manner. Taking on a base-build that peaked with BREEAM Excellent and had no wellbeing considerations of note could have been a constraint, but through early engagement, thoughtful design and collaborative partnerships they achieved something special.

For Overbury to feel the project is truly successful though, they want to use it as a catalyst for positive change. To this end, they recently hosted BCO and CoreNet seminars to share their experiences of delivering an efficient, healthy workplace. They have also created press releases, created a microsite, shared case studies and encouraged the same of their partners, held internal seminars and are promoting this agenda across their 250,000+ Deloitte Global network. Winning this award would validate their efforts; give them the platform to share their learnings wider; and inspire the industry to continue to innovate in pursuit of a truly sustainable future.

Highlights:

  • Their environmental agenda delivered the highest BREEAM 2014 Refurbishment & Fit-Out score ever achieved at 94%
  • Their wellbeing strategy ensured 1 New Street Square became the largest WELL Gold certified commercial interior worldwide
  •  Delivering both in parallel meant they became the first office fit-out to attain BREEAM Outstanding/ WELL Gold worldwide
