Hush Heath Winery, Tonbridge, Kent - submitted by BBS Construction

BBS and Hush Heath have been working collaboratively since 2017 and have now completed three projects together: the prestigious Hush Heath Winery, the historic coastal Ship Inn, Rye, and trendy The Bull and The Hide pub and accommodation in the City of London. At each project they have completed for Hush Heath, the client's attention to quality and detail never wavers, with aspirations of creating a unique customer experience and excellent customer service being at the heart of what they do.

The client, Richard Balfour-Lynn, was very hands-on with all three projects. His clear leadership ensured that all parties were working towards Hush Heath’s aspirations throughout the design process and the actual build. BBS worked in close partnership with their client and this close liaison enabled BBS to relay the ethos of quality and ‘customer first’ to all of the subcontractors.

At all three projects, BBS’s site managers facilitated regular project meetings with the client and design team, discussing site progress, allowing them flexibility to adapt to situations and value engineering opportunities to achieve savings and enhance the materials and products which were utilised throughout.

This teamwork and collaboration can be seen in both the quality of the pub refurbishment works and within all elements of the new winery building from the agricultural design concept inspired by local rustic Kentish barns (developed between the client, architect and BBS) to the locally sourced materials procured by BBS from supply chain partners.

It was also imperative to the client from the offset that the new winery building offered employment opportunities. Both Hush Heath’s staff levels have increased as a result of the new facility. And during the build, BBS and their supply chain collectively employed eight apprentices and additional qualified personnel, including a trainee architectural technician, M&E apprentices, electricians, plasterers and the opportunity to trial new hybrid surveying technology at the site.

Highlights:

  • Hands-on leadership ensured that all parties were working towards Hush Heath’s aspirations throughout the design process and build
  • Flexibility to adapt to situations and value engineering opportunities
  • Local work for local people
