People Development SECBE Award 2021 finalist

Industrial Construction (Sussex) Ltd focuses a lot on training and staff development. In the past year, they have invested in more than 60 days of training across the company, from Office and Admin staff, Site Supervisors and Onsite Operatives to Senior Management Team - on a wide range of courses including new skills along with refreshers for 30 different people.

All training is managed internally by their PA to the Operations Manager and Office Manager/Executive PA using their Training Matrix.

Some of the training undertaken related to site safety items, which included Asbestos Awareness, Manual Handling, Stair and Tower inspections and Cladboy training, along with refresher courses in IPAF and IPAF CPD Webinars. A number of members of staff also completed their SMSTS and SSSTS courses or CIOB Site Management Level 4.

Throughout the year, two of their Estimating department carried out their NVQ in Construction Contracting Operations (Estimating) giving them a solid knowledge to progress their career in Estimating. As well as this, two Site Operatives are currently carrying out their Liquid Applied NVQs. One of their Contracts Managers has been carrying out his Skilled Worker qualifications by undertaking a Roof Sheeting and Cladding NVQ to ensure that his skills are fully up to date. One of their Supervisors has been consolidating his knowledge by completing a Level 3 Supervision NVQ, allowing him to step up and work closer with Contracts Managers.

Office skills development included Reception Skills, Business Administration, Level 3 Executive PA Specialist Certificate and upskilling their internal Marketing team in Digital and Social Media Marketing.

The company has also invested in ILM Leadership and Management Level 5 for Senior Management, the first formal training for management carried out by the company, this has been followed up with CPD sessions with other staff to share the knowledge and grow together as a company.

A number of their staff are currently working on Supply Chain Sustainability School courses in Project Management, Leadership and Management, Business Development and Sustainable Procurement to name a few, as well as numerous CPDs through The Institute of Roofing.

They believe that training and education is an important factor in ensuring that the company can deliver the highest level of service expected by customers and clients. It is also vital for individual personal grown and for the Construction Industry as a whole.

They are proud of their team, promoting a positive attitude within their company culture, and of the combined efforts of each person contributing to the success of ICS.

  • Finding new training providers to provide ongoing and new training requirements.
