The Built Environment

The built environment is one of the most important economic sectors in the UK accounting for 75% of the nations' wealth. From a skyscraper to a lamppost, the built environment is made up of everything that provides a platform for human activity. It includes residential, commercial, industrial and public buildings as well as supporting infrastructure such as roads, railways, bridges, tunnels and masts, utilities, engineering and built public spaces. It has a profound effect on the social, economic and environmental well-being of the nation and underpins many other business sectors

The South East is home to 27% of the UK's firms in this sector with 37,000 companies engaged in delivering the built environment. Clients, developers, designers, contractors and suppliers employ nearly 300,000 people generating £18 billion per annum
