Site Waste Management Plans

Effective from 6 April 2008, Site Waste Management Plans (SWMPs) became mandatory for all construction projects in England with a project cost greater than £300,000 (excl. VAT).   It is hoped that SWMPs will help industry to maximise waste efficiency, while simultaneously bolstering existing regulations to combat waste crime.

SECBE recently surveyed a diverse range of businesses and organisations affected by the new regulations.  We wanted to ascertain a true picture of understanding and implementation.  The results revealed a significant lack of understanding, confusion over responsibilitites and absence of imperative given poor communication over enforcement.

SECBE has developed a suite of training programmes to assist you to quickly and easily implement effective and efficient SWMPs.

What is a Site Waste Managemnt Plan
A Site Waste Management Plan (SWMP) is simply a plan that details the amounts and types of wastes that will be produced on site and how they will be reused, recycled or disposed of. SWMPs provide a good opportunity to streamline site activities and realise a number of business benefits including:

There are nine key steps to successful implementation of SWMPs

1. Make someone responsible for the SWMP
2. Identify waste streams
3. Review waste management options
4. Decide how to dispose of your waste - best options and liabilities
5. Plan for on-site material efficiency and waste handling
6. Develop communication, training and ‘buy-in'
7. Measure types and volumes of waste
8. Monitor the effectiveness of the SWMP
9. Review and act

We offer two options of training that provide support, strategies and tools to help you quickly learn how to address these nine steps:

OPTION 1 - INTRODUCTION TO SWMP WORKSHOP

This workshop will provide you with a basic understanding of what is a SWMP, why we need them and how to get started with preparing and using a Plan.  It will give you experience through practical application focused on a case study and practice scenario material, so you learn how to manage the process and can be more confident in making a start.

Learning experience
You leave with a full awareness of SWMP requirements, enhanced by working in teams to prepare a practice scenario from the ground up, using example data or your own if you bring these with you (we will send you the requirements for this in advance of the course). You will have the knowledge to progress your own approach, having made a real start at the workshop.

Professional Competence
Attendance at these workshops will deliver a demonstrable level of knowledge and practical understanding for delegates.  In order to assess and record the levels achieved at the end of each programme, delegates will be given a short written assessment.  This is a routine feature of all of our training programmes to ensure that the outcomes you want and need are realised and can be demonstrated.

Delivery and cost
This full day workshop can be delivered as a closed course for any organisation wanting to train its own staff or supply chain. Cost delivered at your own premises for up to 15 people - £1,550 + VAT.
This particular workshop is also available as an open public course @ £299 + VAT

OPTION 2 - SWMP IN PRACTICE WORKSHOP

This programmes expands your knowledge further by including a live real-time ‘mini-site audit' of waste activities and the full development of a basic working draft SWMP for one of your sites. Day One is a half-day awareness session and briefing, followed by a half-day on-site audit of one of your sites, with Day Two being the preparation of the actual draft SWMP for that site and a review of the approach so you are fully trained to roll this out to your operations.

Learning experience
You leave with not just the knowledge of how to do this, but also with your first SWMP as a working draft to progress to the full SWMP for that site and a template for your company. As part of this Level the SECBE/ SDL team will review your final SWMP via email.

Professional Competence
In addition to the above, we have developed a set of competence criteria for 'SWMP Practitioner' which will form the basis of the key learning objectives from this programme.

Delivery and cost
This full day workshop can be delivered as a closed course for any organisation wanting to train its own staff or supply chain. Cost delivered at your own premises for up to 15 people - £2,800 + VAT.

ADDED VALUE VIA EMS (Environmental Management Systems)

SECBE can provide SWMP training as part of our Accelerated EMS programmes to ISO14001 or BS8555 standards. Given the current awareness of environmental issues, and the increasing requirement of organisations to be able to demonstrate robust and proactive environmental credentials to their clients, it is important to consider an EMS lead programme to deliver you clear business and sustainability benefits
