Groundwater
According to the Environment Agency, Groundwater is the largest available reservoir of fresh water. Whilst most of it is locked away in icecaps, it has been traditionally accessed as a water source via wells.
Wells are available in three main forms:
- Drilled They can be over 1,000 ft deep. The sides must be insulated with grouting material to prevent contamination and leakage.
- Driven - usually between 30 to 50 ft deep depending on the whether hand or machine driven, they are simple and economic to construct. They are not usually insulated.
- Dug - these are the original type of well system, dug by hand. Just under the water table, they are quick to implement. However, they lack the necessary construction materials to prevent collapse and contamination and can run dry during prolonged hot weather.
